One resignation, twenty-two MLAs, and a government gone

Jyotiraditya Scindia had been a central figure in Congress's 2018 Madhya Pradesh campaign, but was passed over for the Chief Minister's post in favour of the more senior Kamal Nath, and had grown increasingly at odds with the state leadership since. On 9 March 2020 he submitted his resignation from the Congress, tendering it to Sonia Gandhi the next day, and shortly after joined the BJP in a ceremony with party president J. P. Nadda.

Twenty-two MLAs loyal to Scindia resigned from the Assembly along with him, over the following days, stripping the Kamal Nath government of its majority in a chamber it had governed with only a slim margin since 2018.

Kamal Nath resigned as Chief Minister on 20 March 2020, without forcing a floor test to the end, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan was sworn in for a fourth term as Madhya Pradesh's BJP Chief Minister soon after — the same pattern of resignation-driven coalition collapse seen in Karnataka the year before, this time delivering the state itself rather than just a coalition partner.
