About APHLC
Formed on 6 July 1960 in what was then Assam, under founding president Williamson A. Sangma, to campaign for a separate hill state. Led the movement that created the autonomous State of Meghalaya (1970) and then full statehood (1972); Sangma became Meghalaya's first Chief Minister. APHLC won 32 of 60 seats in the first Meghalaya Assembly election in 1972 and held power for roughly a decade, providing four of the state's chief ministers.
