About AIMIM

Originally founded in 1927 as Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen in Hyderabad, revived in 1958 by Abdul Wahed Owaisi after the party was banned following its role in the pre-1948 Nizam-era Razakar movement. Led by three generations of the Owaisi family since, it has built concentrated strength in Hyderabad's municipal and assembly politics and expanded into other states in recent years, but has never led a state government or held the Chief Minister's office.

Key leaders
  • Abdul Wahed Owaisi — founder/first president, 1958–1975
  • Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi — president, 1983–2008; six-term Hyderabad MP
  • Asaduddin Owaisi — president since 2008; five-term Hyderabad MP
