About Bangla Congress
Founded in Calcutta in 1966 by Ajoy Mukherjee in a split from the INC. Led the United Front coalition that swept the 1967 West Bengal election, ending 20 years of unbroken Congress rule — Mukherjee became Chief Minister with CPM's Jyoti Basu as his deputy, the first non-Congress government in the state's history. Mukherjee served across three short, turbulent terms as United Front coalitions repeatedly collapsed; the party had dissolved by 1971.
