About GNLF

Founded in 1980 by Subhash Ghisingh to demand a separate Gorkhaland state carved from the Darjeeling hills. Led an agitation from 1986–1988 before signing the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council Agreement, trading the statehood demand for a semi-autonomous hill council. Ghisingh chaired the resulting council for close to two decades, making GNLF the dominant political force in the Darjeeling hills — though this was council authority within West Bengal, not a full state government.
