Formed in 1978 in a split from the Indian National Congress led by D. Devraj Urs. Sharad Pawar, then 38, led 40 MLAs out of the parent Congress and became the youngest-ever Maharashtra Chief Minister with Janata Party support; his government was dismissed in 1980 after Indira Gandhi's return to power nationally. The party won 47 Maharashtra assembly seats in 1980 and 54 in 1985 before Pawar merged it back into the INC in 1986.
