About JKNC
Founded by Sheikh Abdullah in 1932 as the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference, renamed National Conference in 1939. Abdullah became Jammu & Kashmir's first Prime Minister in 1948 but was dismissed and imprisoned in 1953 over suspected support for Kashmiri independence; he returned as Chief Minister in 1975 until his death in 1982. Leadership has since passed through three generations of the family — his son Farooq and grandson Omar have each served multiple terms as Chief Minister, most recently with Omar leading the party back to power in the restored J&K assembly in 2024.
