About JNP (Secular)

Formed in July 1979 when Charan Singh broke away from the ruling Janata Party in a dispute partly over legislators' dual membership in the RSS. Charan Singh became Prime Minister with outside Congress(I) support on 28 July 1979 — but that support was withdrawn before he could face Parliament, and he resigned three weeks later, never having won a confidence vote. The party won 41 Lok Sabha seats in the 1980 election before merging into the Lok Dal shortly after.
