About MGP
Goa's first ruling party after Portuguese rule ended in 1961, founded in 1963 by mine owner Dayanand Bandodkar. Drew support from non-Brahmin Hindu migrants from Maharashtra and championed merging Goa into Maharashtra — decisively rejected in a January 1967 opinion poll, after which Goa stayed a separate territory (later state). Bandodkar's daughter Shashikala Kakodkar led a second MGP government from 1977–79; the party's base was steadily absorbed by the BJP from the 1990s onward.
