About PDP

Founded in 1999 by former Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to push for dialogue on Kashmir. PDP first came to power after the 2002 election in a power-sharing coalition with the INC, with Sayeed as Chief Minister until 2005. It returned to power in 2014 in coalition with the BJP; Sayeed again became Chief Minister until his death in January 2016, when his daughter Mehbooba Mufti succeeded him, becoming J&K's first woman Chief Minister until the coalition collapsed in 2018.

Key leaders
  • Mufti Mohammad Sayeed — founder; Chief Minister, 2002–2005, 2015–2016
  • Mehbooba Mufti — Chief Minister, 2016–2018 (first woman CM of J&K)
