About VHP
Founded in 1966 by Rao Birender Singh, a defector from Congress, shortly before Haryana was carved out of Punjab as a separate state. Birender Singh became Haryana's second Chief Minister within months of the state's formation. The party won 16 of 81 Assembly seats in the 1968 election, its strongest showing, but never regained power and merged into Congress(I) in September 1978.
